The urban regeneration project was part of the Integrated Urban Plan of the Metropolitan City of Catania, funded under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) – Next Generation EU. The primary objective was the enhancement of urban spaces with a strong focus on sustainable mobility, safety, and improving the accessibility and liveability of public spaces.
The works involved the urban centers of the municipalities of Pedara, Trecastagni, and Nicolosi, areas renowned for their distinctive historical and cultural heritage. The interventions included the renewal of road and pedestrian pavements, the installation of high-efficiency public lighting systems, the upgrade of underground utilities, and the redevelopment of areas dedicated to tourism and civic life.
From a technical perspective, the project implemented targeted demolitions and the consolidation of existing infrastructure, incorporating advanced technologies for stormwater drainage and traffic safety enhancements. New sidewalks were constructed ensuring the removal of architectural barriers, while pedestrian zones were upgraded with local lava stone paving, in harmony with the historic urban fabric.
The initiative represents a strategic undertaking for the regeneration of the local urban landscape, delivering a positive impact on citizens’ quality of life and fostering territorial economic growth. The combination of technological innovation and respect for historical heritage achieved a sustainable balance between modernization and local identity.
