The seismic retrofitting and rehabilitation of the Margottini Dock is part of the Infrastructure Development Plan for the Port of Reggio Calabria, promoted by the Port System Authority of the Strait and funded under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), within the Next Generation EU framework.

The Margottini Dock, situated in the southern basin of the port, plays a pivotal strategic role in maritime connections with Sicily and in commercial and passenger traffic. However, extensive structural degradation made structural consolidation, functional upgrading, and the installation of modern port equipment and utilities urgent and indispensable.

The project delivers structural and seismic upgrading of the quay through advanced engineering solutions compliant with stringent maritime safety standards. Geotechnical investigations and underwater video inspections identified critical vulnerabilities addressed through selective demolitions and high-precision ground improvement using Jet Grouting technology. The infrastructure’s stability is guaranteed by a combined combi-wall system (tubular piles and sheet piles) anchored with high-capacity Dywidag tie-backs, optimized to withstand severe maritime and seismic forces. Furthermore, the works incorporate new water, fire-fighting, electrical, and cathodic protection systems, alongside the restoration of traditional paving in lava stone and local Reggio stone to maintain functional performance and aesthetic continuity.
